You can make a difference

Are you able to provide a safe, supportive and stable home for a child or young person in need?

You can become a foster carer if you:

  • Have a spare bedroom

  • Have lived in England for at least a year

  • Are single, married or in a long term relationship

  • Are 21 years of age or older

  • Currently have your own children or not

  • Are employed, self employed, unemployed or on benefits

Types of fostering

Not every child or young person’s situation is the same and the best support for them could come from one of a number of way to Foster. Here are the different types of fostering setups that are available with Fostering Devon.

  • Mainstream

    The most common form of fostering – most of our foster carers begin their careers as mainstream foster carers.

  • Child and parent

    Experienced carers work with other staff to support and improve the parenting skills of a family.

    Devon Young People’s Accommodation Service provides a safe environment for vulnerable young people.

  • Unaccompanied asylum seeking children

    We need more foster carers to look after unaccompanied asylum seeking children.

  • Family and friends

    Sometime called connected carers, this is where children are placed with a relative or friend.

  • Private fostering

    When someone who is not a close relative looks afer a child – and the arrangement is made privately.

    This is for children in care who are likely to be adopted, but might still be reunited with their birth family.
